I've
been 'keeping a
beat' since I was 11 - although I gave it up a while I was busy
being a teenager!!
When
I got back into it in my 20's I wondered why I ever gave it up, but was
surprised that I still had the knack - it's a bit like riding a bike, once you
master the
basics
they never leave you. I have always been fascinated with all sorts of music
(especially rock) and the effect it has on people. I love real music from 'real' bands and
don't have too much time for computer generated rubbish which dominates today's
charts. When I was growing up I was listening to bands like Madness, Quo, White Snake,
Queen, Def Leopard, The Stones and Big Country as well as the popular stuff
of the day, things like Level 42 and Duran Duran.
In 1985 I watched the Live Aid concerts and was blown away - I was
stunned by the power of music, everybody reacts to music and there's always a
song to fit the mood or occasion. Then one day I find myself listening to
classic gold and realising that (musically speaking) things have moved
on faster than I have, and so in the age of techno
& dance crap that is 2007 I find myself in a band paying
tribute to an icon from the 70's, 80's & 90's - real
music if you ask me. A
natural extension of my musical enthusiasm is to be able to play- sadly I
can't tell a guitar from a saxophone, far less tell you which key something is
in but I love drumming!!
Aladdinsane
has been a great
experience for me and I have no doubt that the best has yet to come. I have been
involved in other musical
'experiments' in the past but nothing
that has been
so much fun especially
performing live (which is the real kick!!). I met Paul and Carl in August
1998 to help
out with a couple of Charity gig's for their band
Cerulean and ended up staying for 4 years. During this time I
helped
Paul to complete the recording of
his album Mesmerised.
When
Cerulean came to an
end in 2003
I went off and joined a band playing covers in private clubs around the East
Midlands for a while, following
that I was involved with
a few more bands and did a bit of helping out local bands. During this time
I played for
Aladdinsane on a number of occasions so when there was an opportunity to re join
on a permanent basis I jumped
at the chance. Looking back at the years between 2003 & 2005 I think that the
diversity of helping out other bands has improved me as a drummer, and helped me
to reproduce Bowie's songs accurately and faithfully. I find working with Paul &
Carl enjoyable and
rewarding, due to their professionalism and dedication, Franco joining the
band has been a major plus - the guy just loves it and has had a major impact on
the bands sound. Some of Bowie's songs are my personal all time favourites
and its great to play them. Looking ahead I believe that Aladdinsane will go
from strength to strength I have no doubt that the band will fulfil its
potential and establish itself as the top
David Bowie Tribute Band
in the UK.
