I suppose the big  question is why have I decided to get into the Bowie tribute scene in the first place? After being a huge fan of David Bowie from childhood I found that people who heard me sing began to point out that my voice bore an uncanny likeness to his voice. As a result I have never been able to get away without playing a Bowie song at any gig or event. As time progressed the constant query from people was “When are you going to do some real Bowie shows?”

Going back to the 80’s I started playing live, sometimes as guest appearances with other bands and later in the 80’s as front man for a band called Nightshift with more of a ‘heavy rock’ slant. We covered songs by various artists including the Stones, T-rex, Billy Idol and many others as well as Bowie. I began to write my own compositions towards the end of that period and went off the idea of performing covers.

After some short studio time I took part in a couple of major competitions performing Bowie songs and was fortunate to do quite well out of it. In late ‘92 after doing some demos of new songs, I was more than happy to win a place on Granada TVs ‘Stars In Their Eyes’ where I performed Bowies ‘Space Oddity’ dressed in full ‘Ziggy’ garb. I kept a low profile for a year or so after that, apart from the odd Bowie convention, because I did not want to throw myself completely into a full on tribute show which many people were expecting. It is quite demanding and at the time I thought it would take me away from the other things I wanted to do. Having said that, I must admit I did miss performing Bowie material, especially playing in front of the hardcore Bowie fans who are a really great crowd, enthusiastic, discerning and very supportive. I then embarked on what I wanted to do from the beginning and formed another band called Cerulean performing original songs along with some self-indulgent cover songs by such bands as Supergrass, Velvet Underground & Placebo.

During the mid 90’s I performed acoustic gigs in a duo along with a bass player where I played cover material and fairly successfully introduced many of my own songs. Around the millennium I took the band into the recording studio and started recording my debut album ‘Mesmerised’. During this recording period the band and I also performed the odd gig here and there. This opened up opportunities for me to do a couple of live sessions on local radio stations. The band continued to play together for a while but eventually had to call it a day due to our other commitments and went out with a bang playing a couple of large festival shows

So here we are in the present and I am enjoying every moment, playing the part of one of England's greatest music legends in great live music venues. I may have put the inevitable off for a while but now the time feels right for me to pay my tribute to the great man himself, as I step onto stages around the country performing live as David Bowie.
